‘Homemade’ consists of four solos that attempt to make sense of my bodies reaction to coming ‘home’ to Amman after a difficult decade living abroad. The solos examine how the sudden change in social constructs of a place affected the way I expressed and understood my gender, identity, sexuality and sense of freedom.
Each solo had its own framework that defined the kind of movements that were made and where in space the body was allowed to go.
At times the dances are constrained within strict parameters, other times my body rebelled against them. Through these encounters with rules by body experienced moments of comfort, confinement, restriction, frustration, rage, empowerment, defiance, rebellion, obedience, permission, fear, surrender, defeat, determination, sensuality and freedom.
Premiere: Haya Cultural Centre, Amman Jordan
Derived from the traditional Circassian «Къафэ» (Qafe), a stately slow dance performed with pride touching on aloofness and with a great measure of self-control. The deceptively simple and severe steps quickly exhaust and serve to demonstrate the female body’s ability to endure. The only body parts moving in this piece are the arms and feet in a straight line, based on the traditional «Къафэ» (Qafe) dance steps.

A reflection on the nature of the female experience that takes place within 1 square meter of space. Through isolated body movements with carefully considered timings and qualities the body tells an unspoken story that celebrates the collective experience of womanhood.

A release of whatever stimulus comes to the body, without consideration. A barrage of impulsive actions that are a product of anxious thoughts. Frantic and aimless, an explosion of energy just for the sake of it, echoing the hopeless state of existence in a city where dreams come to die.
