2017
loop is a site-specific performance intervention commissioned for the opening of amman design week in october 2017.
the project features 11 participants performing a coordinated walk consisting of series of movement sequences inspired by research on human and non-human group dynamics in cityscapes. for example flocks of birds, army parades and sheep. the sequences were designed to travel across the site in a circuit that was repeated three to four times.
the project questions the notion of belonging by making a group of individuals follow a strict movement framework that they must execute collectively in unison by sensing each other. by doing this the work highlights how humans subconsciously make the choice to sacrifice their own individuality for the sake of the collective one in order to experience a sense of belonging. the performers themselves slowly start to form a collective bond due to the movement synchrony which has been scientifically proven to play a role in social bonding.
